HISTORY OF THE VULTURE MINE:

The Vulture Gold Mine was discovered in 1863 by Henry Wickenburg. Henry
sold the mine after a few years. The Vulture, however, went on to become
the most productive gold mine in the history of Arizona. Vulture City grew
to a population of almost five thousand people. The mine sparked the
development of Arizona and the city of Phoenix.

The Vulture Mine produced gold worth more than 200 million dollars. The
exact amount is unknown. Some say that nearly half of the Vulture’s gold
was stolen. "Highgrading" or theft of the high grade ore was common at the
Vulture. At least 18 men were hung on the Vulture City’s hanging tree,
nearly all for highgrading.

When President Franklin Roosevelt closed the mine in 1942 (WW II) people
left believing they would return in six months. The mine never reopened.
Almost overnight a once thriving community became a ghost town.

We arrived at 4:00pm and paid our entrance fees of $10.00 per person. We
were given our maps of the area and took our tour while it was still light.

The Assays Office
The Assays office and managers headquarters seemed to be the biggest
building in this small ghost town. There were five rooms downstairs and two
rooms upstairs. The only shower in the building was upstairs next to one of
the bedrooms. The building itself was built from low grade ore containing
about $600,000.00 of gold and silver. This building also had a depository
under the floor that was used to hold the gold and silver bullion until it
was ready to be shipped out.

Main Kitchen
The main kitchen on the property consisted of pantries, shelves, old dishes
from the era and other cooking utensils. The kitchen also contained a big
cast iron stove suitable for cooking for all of the miners. Down the hall is
an old wooden ice box with glass and mirrored doors. It's hard to imagine
what the old adobe building attached to the kitchen looked like before the
weather destroyed it.

The
Bunk House
The bunk house was a long and narrow adobe and rock building that  still
contained an old bed frame. The adobe walls were crumbling down with only
a single window frame holding up the roof on one side. The wooden floors
were almost non-existent in some spots so one really needs to watch their
step when entering the building. There were remnants of 1920's era
vehicles abandoned in front of the building.

The Work Shop
The work shop made from rock, adobe and wood, still stands although
portions have fallen to the ground. There are still tools and machinery
left on the old wooden benches and scattered throughout the building. The
near perfect turquoise blue and white stove sitting behind the building
looked out of place from the rubble 20 feet away. More automobile parts
were scattered in this area as well.

The Hanging Tree
18 former residents ended their lives here at the Hanging Tree for rape,
murder and highgrading. The hanging tree was located next to Henry
Wickenburg's original private residence.

Pictures of interest
With no light sources in the main kitchen area, we have a
energy streak coming from the right side of the frame.
In the old school house, there is an unexplained
shadow anomaly in the upper left corner of the frame.
This was taken at The Hanging Tree by T.Az.P.S.
investigator Gino Madrid. There is absolutely no
explanation as to what this is a photo of. This
was the only photo that came out so eerily at
the Vulture Mine. Yes there seems to be some
"skull" like things in there but who knows.

The Vulture Mine is one of the most interesting ghost towns we've
ever been in. After seeing all of the old buildings and learning the
history behind them, the public should appreciate the fact that if it
wasn't for The Vulture Mine, we probably wouldn't have the city of
Phoenix today. It truly is an amazing place for anyone, young or old,
to go and visit for a day just to see and imagine what it was like to
live back then.
The investigation was fun and informative. We all had a great time
being there. The opportunity for all of us to explore and experience
The Vulture Mine is a memory that will not be forgotten and we want
to thank Roma and Marty Hagan from our hearts for their kindness,
hospitality and knowledge of the mine.
"Thank you Roma for being especially kind to my group and providing
us with an adventure that we shall cherish forever".

.....Frank Madrid

Towards the end of the
recording, you can just make
out the answer "yes".
This recording is what sounds
to be a disembodied heavy sigh
or exhale.
This is a response to being thanked
for moving the door. You can hear
"no problem" being quickly whispered.
This is a whispered answer to
a question. You can hear"no".
This is the beginning of
when the door started
moving by itself.
The door continues to
move at the request of
the investigator.
About mid way through this
recording, you can make out
the words "Get Out".
Again the door continues
to move at the request of
the investigator.
After the investigator dropped
his flashlight, you can hear w
whispered "It Bounced".
The investigator asks "Do you
like math"? The response is
"Yes".
