| market. Common sense and afford ability usually determines what you can and cannot purchase. Currently, the choices are film and digital cameras as well as other more scientific types- (spectral, Schlieren Systems, Infrared camera/film, Thermal Imaging etc). Some people prefer film, others prefer digital. Each had its advantages and disadvantages. Once again, it is your choice. Most investigators use digital cameras for the ease of computer photo analysis and exportation via the Internet. Some investigators utilize the film camera for regular photos as well as infrared photos and the analysis of obtained negatives. Either way, fully research both digital and film cameras to determine which type you are interested in and what is affordable to you. Any accessory purchases for the camera is a personal choice and decisions on purchasing what is desired will have to be made accordingly. Know your camera’s functions completely and understand all settings. You should have the date and time stamp set accordingly before any investigation. 1. Check your cameras operating condition before each investigation. Make sure you have a supply of fresh batteries, clear memory card(s) and a clean lens. 2. If your camera has the option, please set it on “silent” mode as not to corrupt or raise questions of indifferent sounds recorded on audio. 3. Know the operation of your camera. Adjust the settings the camera for the highest resolution when possible. Make sure that the strap is situated as not to interfere with the lens. If a problem develops during an investigation and you don’t quite know how to correct it, ask for advice. We are here to help each other in any way we can and we may be able to help correct the problem. 4. If you must take a picture into a mirror, angle your position as not to capture your flash. Any streaks on the mirror are enhanced by the flash and may be mistaken for something paranormal. If a mirror is to be cleaned, ask permission to do so. Use a standard non streaking window cleaning product. 5. When in darkness, the irises in our eyes are dilated to allow more light in to see. When taking flash pictures with other investigators present, in your normal voice, say the word "flash" before taking the picture. This is just a courtesy for other investigators and no other explanation is needed. 6. Always have your camera ready to shoot. There have been experiences where an investigator has come around a corner and seen an apparition floating down a hall way. His camera was ready and he was composed enough to capture the apparition with his camera. 7. Certain spirits may use most any type of reflective surfaces such as mirrors, glass windows, doors with glass windows, water, or even mirrored sun glasses as a medium for manifestation so keep this in mind while taking pictures during investigations. 8. Take as many pictures as you feel necessary for the investigation. It is very common to find that you have taken 100 to 200 pictures on one investigation. 9. If a client who is present wants to maintain his or her confidentiality, do not include them in your pictures. 10. Analysis of pictures may simply consist of adjustments of brightness, contrast. Zoom, crop and saving image as JPEG (most common format) for analysis or exporting. Always maintain a copy of the picture in its original form for comparison. Depending on your photo program and your knowledge of its use, try and keep it simple. Any extraordinary pictures published can, and may be, looked at using an "EXIF" program which allows all information pertaining to the camera and picture to be seen, including layers and curious additions. Keep it simple and true and honest. 11. Take your time and look very closely at each photograph. If there is anything captured that you feel may be paranormal in nature, or if there is something questionable that you want a second opinion on, please include it with your investigation report along with a description of all pictures in question.
